Engineering design services

RB Solutions provides design and consultancy only, with no equipment to sell. Each recommendation is made for the process, not for a product range, so clients, contractors and equipment suppliers can rely on it as an independent design.

  • Process design and basis of design

Design flows, loads, consent limits and operating cases set out as one agreed basis, with every value traced to its source.

  • Mass and energy balances

Stream-by-stream balances for normal, peak and minimum cases, issued with closure checks on water, solids and heat.

  • PFD creation

Process flow diagrams to BS EN ISO 10628-2, drawn from the mass balance, with stream tables, equipment lists and design conditions on the sheet.

  • P&ID creation

Piping and instrumentation diagrams with ISA-5.1 instrument loops, valve and actuator fail positions, line numbering, specification breaks, relief and safeguarding.

  • Live P&ID

A browser-based P&ID linked to the design calculation, so line sizes, duties and stream data update when the design changes and every party works from one current drawing.

  • P&ID process assessment

Existing P&IDs assessed for continuity, control, isolation, relief and safeguarding, with findings ready for HAZOP and for correction before issue.

  • 3D plant design

3D plant models built from the client P&ID: equipment, pipe routes, access platforms and maintenance envelopes, with clash checks before fabrication.

  • Engineering drawing creation

General arrangements, sections, elevations, tank and skid details and pipework drawings to BS EN ISO 128 and BS EN ISO 5457, under document control.

  • Plan views and layouts

Plan and general arrangement views of plant, tanks, skids and pipe routes, coordinated with the P&ID for access, maintenance and lifting.

  • Tender support documentation

Process descriptions, functional design specifications, equipment datasheets, technical schedules and tender returns prepared for clients and contractors.

  • Pricing support

Capital and operating cost estimates, equipment and material take-offs, budget enquiries to suppliers and priced schedules for tender submissions.

  • Equipment and hydraulic sizing

Tanks, pumps, clarifiers, filters, mixers, weirs, launders and pipework sized from the balance, with the governing criterion stated.

  • Water and effluent treatment design

Potable water, wastewater and industrial effluent: lamella clarifier, MBBR, SBR, precipitation, pH correction and filtration process design.

  • Design review and verification

Independent review of vendor proposals and third-party designs, with each calculation repeated by a second method.

  • Feasibility and options studies

Treatment routes compared on performance, footprint, operating cost and risk, leading to a clear recommended option.

  • CFD modelling

Computational fluid dynamics of tanks, clarifiers, mixers, inlets, launders and pipe networks: single and multiphase flow (gas–liquid aeration, solid–liquid settling, free surface), turbulence, heat transfer, particle tracking, non-Newtonian sludge rheology, short-circuiting and residence time distribution, validated against first-principles hydraulics.

  • DSEAR assessments

Risk assessment under the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002: hazardous area classification to BS EN IEC 60079-10-1 and 60079-10-2, release and ventilation assessment, zone drawings and equipment category selection.

  • Thermal analysis

Heat and energy balances, heat exchanger and chiller sizing, heat loss and insulation, trace heating and frost protection, and transient heating and cooling of tanks and process streams.

  • Process simulation

Steady-state and dynamic simulation of treatment trains, control loops, tank levels and dosing, used to test operating cases, start-up and upset conditions before construction.

  • Hand calculations

Independent hand calculations and check calculations, set out step by step with sources and units, to verify software output, vendor figures and third-party designs.

  • Technical reports

Design reports, calculation packages, basis of design documents and technical notes written for clients, regulators and independent reviewers.

  • Scientific studies

Literature reviews, treatability and bench studies, water chemistry and solubility modelling, reaction kinetics, gas transfer, heat transfer and statistical analysis of site data.

From enquiry to issued design

  1. Scope and fixed fee

Deliverables are listed and priced as a fixed fee before work begins.

  2. Basis of design

Flows, qualities and limits are agreed in writing with the client.

  3. Calculation

One calculation record produces every figure used in the design.

  4. Drawings

PFDs, P&IDs and datasheets are generated from that record.

  5. Verification and issue

Figures are checked by a second method, then issued under document control.

First-principles calculation and validation

Calculations start from conservation of mass, energy and momentum, chemical equilibrium, reaction kinetics and transport phenomena. Rules of thumb and vendor figures are used only to check the result, never to replace it.

Conservation laws first

Every design is built on closed mass and energy balances, with each stream accounted for and closure checked before any equipment is sized.

Governing physics and chemistry

Sizing follows from the governing equations: settling velocity, head loss, gas transfer, solubility and reaction rate, not from catalogue selection.

Dimensional and unit checks

Every equation is checked for dimensional consistency and every value carries its units through the calculation.

Range of validity

Each correlation is used only inside the conditions it was derived for, such as Reynolds number, concentration and temperature, and the check is recorded.

Independent second method

Each governing quantity is calculated twice by different routes and must agree within a stated tolerance before issue.

Sourced inputs

Design parameters carry their reference: standard, published paper or measured site data. Nothing is assumed silently.

Drawings follow the calculation

When a figure changes, the calculation is rerun and the drawings are reissued from it, so text and drawings cannot disagree.

Sensitivity and uncertainty

Design inputs are varied across their credible range and the effect on each governing quantity is reported, so margins are stated rather than assumed.

Validation against benchmarks

Results are compared with published data, operating plant and independent figures, and any difference is explained before issue.

Controlled documents

Deliverables are numbered, reviewed and approved under document control aligned to ISO 9001:2015.

Common questions

What does RB Solutions provide?

RB Solutions provides scientific and process engineering design services only: basis of design, mass and energy balances, process flow diagrams, P&IDs, equipment and hydraulic sizing, design review and feasibility studies. It does not supply equipment.

How are engineering calculations verified?

Each design figure is produced by a calculation that writes its results to a single record, and is then checked by an independent second method with a stated tolerance. Units, input consistency and range of validity are checked before any figure is issued.

Which standards are drawings produced to?

Process flow diagrams and P&IDs follow BS EN ISO 10628-2 graphical symbols, with instrument identification to ISA-5.1 and ISO 3511. UK sites are designed to UK legislation and BS EN standards.

How is a project priced?

Work is quoted as a fixed fee against a written scope of deliverables. Any additional work is priced and agreed before it starts. Prices are quoted excluding VAT.

Can RB Solutions review a vendor proposal?

Yes. Vendor process proposals are checked against the basis of design, recognised design guidance and an independent calculation, and the findings are issued as a formal review with each item traced to its source.

Discuss a project

Send a description of the process, design flows and any existing drawings. A written scope and fixed fee follow.
